tail shot of a young humpback whale

If you ever go whale watching in the big island, make sure to hook up with the company called Body Glove.  They have an outstanding naturalist on board the boat.  Denver, provides wonderful information about the lives of the Humpback whale, and fascinating facts that you probably do not know.  For instance, did you know that scientists are not exactly sure how long whales live?  Up near Alaska, they found one with arrow tips embedded inside the carcass that dated back over 150 years.

On our trip, we were also fortunate to see pilot whales (uncommon to shallow waters) and spinner dolphins, who liked to swim in front of the boat.  One actually smiled at me as he/she turned.  (I was sitting at the best spot on the boat...up in the front!

Unfortunately, Mom and Junior, here, did not jump into the air (breach) for us, so all I got were tail shots or those where the whales rolled over.  Maybe next time.
